Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

William is listed as being killed in action on 18 Jul 1918. The war diary for the day is transcribed below and tells us that he was killed by enemy artillery fire.

Trenches - July 18th: Fine day. 2nd Duke of Wellington's on our left carry out a large raid on the enemy's posts at 2.30pm. On account of the difficulty of starting from their line (which runs through Pacaut Wood) the go over from our front line. C Coy the previous night prepared steps in the parapet and made gaps in the wire. The raid is very successful and 29 prisoners are captured. Our artillery put down a very good barrage & the enemy retaliate in about 5 minutes after zero on our own front and support lines. At 3.15pm everything quieten down again. We have 10 casualties - 4 killed & 6 wounded. C Coy at night fill up gaps in the wire. Hostile machine gun fire above normal at night. Lieut H.B. Hillard wounded. END
