Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Leslie is listed as dying of wounds on 25 Aug 1918 and was buried at St. Hilaire Cemetery in Frevent which at that time was home to the 3rd Canadian, 19th and 43rd Casualty Clearing Stations. The war diary suggests that Leslie was most likely wounded the day before he died and the war diary for that day is transcribed below.
 
Blairville - Aug 24: 5am The Battalion moved forward & relieved 13th London Regt along a line running approximately 100yards east of road running T.19. A&C, the relieve was complete by 5am. Battalion HQ were established at S.24.c.9.1.
 
7am: At 7am the Battalion attacked, A Coy on the right B Coy on the left and C Coy in support at S.24.A & D Coy in reserve at 2.17.D. The 7th Bn Midds Regt were on our left and the Welsh Guards on our right.
 
10am: The Battalion reached its objective in Summit Trench and Ledger Reserve at T.22.C&Dby 10am and pushed forward outposts. Casualties estimated at 4 officers and 51 OR's. Killed Capt Keeoping, 2/Lt Cousens, 2/Lt Child and missing believed wounded 2/Lt Thorne. Battalion HQ were established at T.27.a.1.8. Orders were received to continue the advance on the Hindenburg Line with C&D Coys in the front line, B is support and A Coy in reserve.
 
Zero hour 7.30pm. The Battalion was unable to gain its Objective owing to a heavy barrage & M.G. fire, they advanced about 500 yards sustaining heavy casualties:- 3 Officers and 117 OR's and were forced to withdraw to their old line. END
