Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Walter is listed as being killed in action on 22 Feb 1917. The war diary for the period 21st to 23rd February is transcribed, in full, below.

Loos RT Sub-Section - 21/2/17: Artillery inactive on both sides. The enemy's arial darts were silenced by rifle grenades. Enemy M.G's active during the night. Our Lewis Guns dispersed a working party opposite SAP G. Our snipers claimed 3 hits.

Loos RT Sub-Section - 22/2/17 - 2.55pm: The enemy sprang a mine [Tunnel filled with explosives] presumably a Camonflit [Tunneling term] in front of Right Platoon, Rt Coy. Patrol reconnoitered this at night & found a deep crack along the centre.

Enemy T.M's [Trench Mortars] active during the night but were silenced by our artillery. Our snipers claim 1 hit. Hostile patrol approached Russian Sap and was fired on by the sentry & dispersed.

Loos RT Sub-Section - 23/2/17 - 12mn: Battalion relieved by 8th East Lancs Regt & went into billets at Les Brebis. END
