Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Frederick is listed as being killed in action on 3 Dec 1917. The battalion was diary for that day is a brief entry and is transcribed below as well the two days before his death. It is likely that Frederick was killed during the heavy shellfire mentioned belowIn the Line - Gouzeaucourt Wood 1st Dec: The 2nd Guards Brigade lay in support in and around Gouzeaucourt Wood while the 1st and 3rd Brigade renewed their attack in front of Gouzeaucourt Village. At dusk the 2nd Brigade relieved the 1st Guards in the line. The battalion relieved the 1st Battalion Irish Guards. No 1 Company was in the front line N.E of Gouzeaucourt in touch with the 3rd brigade on the left. No 2 Company and No 3 Company with which was merged the remains of No 4 Company were in support on the Eastern outskirts of the village. Soon after the relief was complete warning was received that the Germans were expected to make a heavy counter-attack next morning. END
In the Line - Gouzeaucourt Wood 2nd Dec: No counter-attack was made. The night and early morning were fairly quiet but the whole position was heavily shelled from 10.30am to 5pm. A counter-attack was expected but the enemy remained quiet except for his artillery. END
In the Line - Gouzeaucourt Wood 3rd Dec: Very heavy shelling in the morning on Gouzeaucourt Village and our Support line. Afternoon quieter. END
