Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Herbert is listed as being killed in action on May 14th 1915. The war diary for that day is transcribed below:
 
"May 14 - Trenches [near Sanctuary Wood NE of Zillebeke]. The enemy's saphead [listening post - more here] was discovered and reconnoitered after dark. The new defensive line behind No 1 Trench was completed. A mining section was called for and a counter tunnel against the enemy's sap [trench - more here] was commenced by the R. E. from No 1 Trench. Casualties 2nd Lt Baker wounded. Other ranks 2 killed [including Herbert] and 8 wounded".
 
NB - The term Sapper used by the Royal Engineers is derived from the men who would dig the saps that would allow them to get closer to an enemy position.
