Charles is listed as being killed in action on 19th October 1917. The 6th Battalion war diary entry for the 19th is difficult to read clearly but is transcribed below. Sanctury Wood – 19 Oct 1917: The Battalion still in the Front Line Trenches. The enemy shelled the sector & Coy heavily throughout the day and at night. He was also active with machine guns and were firing from Ponderboek Chateau. No movement or work could be undertaken during day light, but a night the existing trenches were improved? and places where they had been broken in were repaired. Rations were carried up to the Battn by the 6th Battn Somerset LI. Casualties: Other Ranks Killed 12 and Wounded 17 |
