William is listed as being killed in action on 25th September 1916. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 22nd to 27th September are transcribed below and indicate that William may have been killed on the 27th. William was originally buried at Map Reference 57C.T.10.c.5.7, a point just W of Morval. His remains were moved to Guards Cemetery on or about 13th August 1919. Briqueterie - 22 Sep 2025: Fine day. Intense shelling. Hostile aeroplanes very active. Relief by 14th Warwickshire completed by 12.30am. Battalion moved into bivouac at Oxford Copse Oxford Copse - 23 Sep 2025: Battalion still in bivouac resting. 27 other ranks admitted to Field Ambulance. Oxford Copse - 24 Sep 2025: Foggy morning turning into a lovely day. Battalion moved up into reserve and occupied trench running SE from Arrow Head Copse. Employed during night carrying up stores to K.O.S.B’s [Kings Own Scottish Borderers] Oxford Copse - 25 Sep 2025: Fine day. Our artillery and aeroplanes very active. Zero hour 12.35pm. The whole Battalion out carrying stores up to front line, the Battalion not being strong enough to partake in active operations was employed in carrying. Oxford Copse - 26 Sep 2025: Fine day. Very quiet all day. Battalion relieved by 10th R.B & 11th K.R.R. Bivouacked for the night in Oxford Copse. Citadel - 27 Sep 2025: Fine morning. Battalion moved over to Citadel at 5pm being caught by very heavy thunderstorm just before getting in. Hostile aeroplanes flew over camp between 10 and 11om and scored 3 direct hits on camp killed 5 and wounding 30 of various regiments, also some artillery bursts. |
