Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action on the 17th October 1918. The 11th Battalion war diary ends on 1st October 1917 and we cannot find the subsequent one, probably because the Battalion was moved to the Italian theatre shortly after John's death and those diaries are not yet online. A newspaper obituary in the Stratford Herald gives some details of his death and is transcribed below.

Stratford Herald - Friday 2nd November 1917
LANCE CORPORAL J. W. ROSE

The sympathy of many friends will be extended to Mrs. Rose of West Street in the sad loss on the battlefield of her younger son who was 28 years of age. Lance Corporal Rose was for many years in the service of Mr. John Newland with whom he served his apprenticeship. He then went to Mr. Wylies' ironmongery establishment at Warwick and subsequently to Messrs. Broadways at Worksop.

In February 1915 he joined the Sherwood Foresters and four months later went to France. He was home on leave in August this year and announcing his death which occurred on 16th October Lieutenant L. H. Gibbs says "during very heavy shelling he was hit on the head by a small piece of shrapnel and died instantly. He was buried beyond the support trenches by our own company. Your great loss is shared by both officers and men. He was one of our best machine gunners and will be sadly missed." The deceased's elder brother is serving his country's interests in France.
