Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Red Cross Records tell us that George was taken prisoner at Levantie on 9 Apr 1918 during the German Spring Offensive and held at Dulmen Prisoner of War Camp. He died there of scarlet fever and pneumonia.
It is likely that George was one of 96 men who were originally buried at Dulmen Prisoners of War Cemetery before his remained were moved to Cologne after the end of the war.

The war diary for the day George was taken prisoner is transcribed below:
Enemy launched a heavy attack at dawn after a bombardment commencing at 4.15am on Portugeuse Front and on our right Brigade front. Battalion HQ moved to Doulieu at 2.20pm and subsequently to Vieux Berqin.
Battalion transport moved to Vieux Berqin. Three gun limbers remained at Doulieu
.

George is named as being Missing between the 9th & 14th April 1918 in the Casualty appendix to the diary.
