Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

On 4 Feb 1917 the battalion was in the front line trenches at Biaches when they subject of a very heavy artillery barrage which, according to the war diary, caused "carnage" on the Front Support and Communications trenches and as a result the battalion suffered casualties of 35 killed, 4 died of wounds, 60 wounded and 14 missing. William was one of those killed.
