Circumstances of Death
Eric was wounded in action at Zandvoord and died from his wounds on way to hospital in an ambulance somewhere between Klein Zillebeke and Ypres. The 4th Brigade war diary entries for the period 22nd to 24th October 1914 are transcribed below. N of the Zandvoorde - 22.10.1914: C Battery had 2 sections in action just N of the Zandvoorde ridge where they were shelled throughout the day, but not very accurately, fire was directed on various objectives in a southerly and easterly direction. K Battery with 7th Cavalry Brigade were in reserve in Hooge & moved into action near Klein Zillebeke at about 2pm firing towards Houthem and Kortewilde, the battery was withdrawn at dusk. N of the Zandvoorde - 23.10.1914: C as for 22nd. German fire more severe, Lt. E.L Talbot wounded by shell & died on his way to Ypres. K in action about same place as on 22nd. N of the Zandvoorde - 24.10.1914: C withdrawn to a position 1200 yards from crest as they were unable to clear the crest at short ranges & the forward position held no compensation advantages. K as for 23rd. |
