Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as dying from wounds on 9 Feb 1917. The 14th Battalion war diary entries for the 1st to 10th February along with a record from the 4th Stationary Hosp are transcribed below and they reveal that Charles may have been killed on the 10th not the 9th as recorded by the CWGC.

4th Stationary Hospital, St. Omer 30 Jan 1917: Charles was discharged and returned to duty

Givenchy - Left - 1.2.17: Battalion relieves 15/R War R in front line. A Coy, Capt Bailey on right, B Coy Capt Neal on left with C Coy & D Coy right and left supports. Weather conditions very cold and frosty.

Givenchy - Left - 3.2.17: 1 other rank wounded by rifle grenade

Givenchy - Left - 4.2.17: Pte W.E. Harrison killed by... [rifle grenade?]

Gorre - 6.2.17: Relieved by 15/R War R & withdraw to reserved billets. A draft of 61 other ranks report for duty. These are good type of men, mostly territorials, many of whom have been out before and wounded. 2/Lt Langley reports for duty.

Gorre - 10.2.17: No 21310 L/C Datson killed in the Chateau Square by a piece of anti-aircraft shell.
1/R West Kent Rgt carried out a most successful daylight raid on the Craters. They captured 1 Officer and 28 Other Ranks & inflicted serious casualties amongst the occupants of dug-outs etc which they bombed. END
