William is listed as being killed in action on 26 Nov 1917. The 33rd Brigade War Diary entries for the 25th, 26th and 27th November are transcribed below but they give no detail about how William was killed other than that they moved into action.

25-11-17: One section of 32nd Battery moved into position about Gravenstafle

26-11-17: Remainder of 32nd Battery RFA and one section of 36th Battery moved into action at Gravenstafle. 1st & 5th Battery started to prepare new forward postion at March Bottom.

27-11-17: Remainder of 36th Battery RFA moved into action at in new position
