Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the day he was killed Jim's battalion was in the front lines at Oosttaverne when they came under a determined raid by an enemy "sturm trupp". The attack was repulsed and the enemy suffered very heavy losses. Later that day they were relieved in the line by 8th Bn North Staffs regiment. The regimental HQ then moved to Onraet Wood and the battalion into the Ridge Defenses support trenches.
