Sydney is listed by the War Graves Commission as having died on 2nd April 1918, however his military records show that he died at some stage during the period 21st March 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offensive and the 2nd April 1918. It is impossible to tell on which of those days Sydney was killed and his name does not appear in the war diary. To see the story of the events of that period please read pages 157 to 169 of the Internet Archive Book, Chronicles of King's Royal Rifle Corps - 1918 which deals with the actions of the 12th Battalion. During the period the 12th Battalion was at the following places: 21st & 22nd March - Fluquieres; 23rd March - Voyennes and the Canal Bank at Offoy; 24th March - Quiquery; 25th March - Billancourt; 26th March - Roye; 27th & 28th March - Arvillers; 29th, 30th & 31st March - Rifle Wood & Mesieres; 1st April - Thennes; 2nd April - Queyauvillers and the route is roughly shown below (click to enlarge) - please note we could not quite fit the start and finish places onto the image.

- We have not been able to find any record of Sydney living in Monks Kirby other than the fact that he enlisted in Rugby in 1914. We
assume that he was a gardener at one of the large local houses, he is listed on the Church Plaque as a resident of Street Ashton, so
perhaps he worked for the the Earl of Denbigh at Street Ashton House.
