Edward is listed as being killed in action on the 30th July 1917. The very brief 16th Battalion war diary entries for the period 27th July to 1st August are transcribed below. Springvale Camp - 27 Jul 1917: Major Parry & Coy Commanders reconnoitered sector to be taken over. Operational Orders 141 for relief attached. Oppy Wood - 28 Jul 1917: Lt Colonel Deakin and 11 OR returned from leave. Battalion relieved 1st Devons. 8.15pm: Relief completed. Oppy Wood - 29 Jul 1917: No entry was made in the war diary on this day. Oppy Wood - 30 Jul 1917: No entry was made in the war diary on this day Oppy Wood - 31 Jul 1917: From 3.30 to 3.50pn enemy barraged front line in Oppy Wood & Marquis Trench with 4.2" obtained several direct hits on trenches. Fortunately there were no casualties. D Coy relieved C Coy in right F L 2nd Lt V Hughes returned from Lewis Gin school. Major FA Parry, 2nd Lt G E Sanders & 17 OR proceeded to England on leave.
