Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The battalion were in the lines at Sarry & Chambrecy when they came under an early morning attack from German forces causing them to retire under heavy machine gun fire to a position SW of Bligny from where they were sent to another position near Sarcy. Carl went missing and was presumed to have been killed during this time.
