Circumstances of Death

Harold was a member of the 63rd Battery Royal Field Artillery which we know became ensieged at Kut-al-Amara during the infamous Siege of Kut where, on 29 Apr 1916, Major-General Charles Townshend surrendered the British Garrison to the Turkish Army and all British servicemen were taken prisoner.

We have not yet found the Red Crescent Record for Harold but have seen records of other men of the 63rd Battery who were held at a Prisoner of War Camp at Ismidt and were later moved to Ada Bazaar camp after a commission from Switzerland inspected Ismidt POW Camp.

We know from his pension card that he died of disease 18 months later. Harold's death certificate states that he died of Malaria in Turkey on 8 Nov 1917.
