Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Gordon is listed as dying of his wounds on 30 Jul 1917, the day before the official start of the Third Battle of Ypres better known as Passchendaele.
 
The brief war diary entries are transcribed below but we know from them and other sources that he was wounded by an exploding shell at MicMac Camp, near Ouderdom on 29 Jul 1917 and died of those on 30 Jul 1917 at the 5th London Field Ambulance based at Reninghelst and buried at Reninghelst New Military Cemetery.
 
MicMac Camp - 29/7/1917: 6 OR's joined. Bn moved into reserve trenches prior to taking up battle position. Weather wet. Capt G Mapplebeck and 5 OR's wounded in action.  Lt H.W.L Anthony reported sick at Field Ambulance. Lt. G.N. Lomax rejoined
 
In trenches - 30/7/1917: Capt G.W. Mapplebeck died of wounds received in action.
 
In trenches - 31/7/1917: The Bn attacked in the early morning about 4.am. About 11 officers and 280 OR's reported casualties. 2/Lt Byas rejoined Bn.  END
