Frank is listed as being killed in action on 18th September 1916. His CWGC Grave Concentration record shows that he was original buried at Map Ref 57C.T.2.c.2.4 before his remains were moved to their current location in Guards Cemetery on 7 Oct 1918 by the 3rd Labour Coy. A map of the original location can be found below with the spot marked by a blue pin. The 10th Battalion war diary entries for the 17th & 18th September are transcribed below. War Diary Entries 17th & 18th SeptTrenches NE of Guinchy – 17 Sep 1916: Relief was not completed until 5.25am. During the day the shelling was as heavy as any experienced by the Battalion. It was discovered that we were holding as our front line a captured German communication trench at right angles to the front held by the enemy. To remedy this an assault on the enemy’s front line was ordered by the Brigadier and duly carried out at 6.30pm but was not successful and that night dispositions remained unchanged. Details of the operation will be found in Appendix [Not transcribed here] attached. There were further heavy casualties. These amounted among other ranks to Killed 11; wounded 79 & missing 7 (Total 97). Among the officers Lt H.B. Everard & 2/Lt C.M. Beasley were wounded and Lt. O.R. Ford is missing at the time of writing. Lt R.W. Train & 2/Lt J.E. Trevor-Jones returned untouched. Trenches NE of Guinchy – 18 Sep 1916: Rainy weather now set in and continued for the rest of the tour, making life in the wrecked trenches almost unbearable. There was no shelter of any kind and men slept standing in mud to the knees. The day was uneventful though the shelling was heavy again. During the afternoon the Brigadier visited Battalion HQ and explained that at night a new trench would be dug parallel with the enemy’s front line for which the Battalion would find a covering party. The party was put out by Lt. Train at 9.30pm and the trench was dug with complete success by Royal Engineers and Pioneers. This day 2/Lt G.W. White was sent to the Rest Station suffering shell shock.
