William is listed as being killed in action on 26th April 1916. The 2nd Battalion war diary entries for the period 25th to 27th April are transcribed below and show that William was killed by a Rifle Grenade fired into his trench. Sanctury Wood – 25 Apr 1916- 7am: Bright and very warm. Enemy aeroplanes very active over area. 8.30pm: Supporting Companies relieved Companies in the front line. A relieved C in right half and B relieved D in right half [?]. No casualties Sanctury Wood – 26 Apr 1916 – 7am: Clear and bright 11am: Three men wounded and four killed by rifle grenade in A Coy right half. 3pm: Heavy shelling on front line. Trenches badly damaged 5pm: CSM Worrall killed near Battalion HQ by rifle grenade. Sanctury Wood – 27 Apr 1916: Warm and bright. Situation normal. Col Stuart attached to Battalion for instruction. |
