Circumstances of Death

Frank is listed as being killed in action of 28 Feb 1916. The Battalion War Diary for that day is transcribed below along with a newspaper report of his death which gives more details than the war diary.

War Diary

28th Feb 1916 - Railway Wood 800x N.W. of Hooge: A Company is shelled by Field Guns about 11.15am. Otherwise the day is quiet. One man of D Coy [Frank] is killed night when on patrol. Our patrols have been particularly active this tour as the identity if the enemy opposite our front is uncertain, and men from A & D Coys have been sent out nightly with the object if possible of taking a prisoner. Newspaper Report

10th March 1916 - Leamington Spa Courier

Private Frank Green, whose death was recorded last week, was the son of Mrs. S. Checkley, Old Milverton. He was serving in the 1st King's Shropshire Light Infantry when the war broke out, having enlisted in Shrewsbury about three years ago.

Private Green's platoon Sergeant, in a letter, says "On February 28th a few volunteers for patrol duty were asked for by the Captain. Private Green who was always one of the first to volunteer for such duty, offered his services again. When about 50 yards from the trench he was seen to fall, having been instantly killed by a bullet in the head.

Green, although only 19 years of age, is described as a splendid fellow, absolutely fearless and always cheerful. The Commander of the late soldiers platoon has also written a letter of sympathy and says "He always proved himself a very brave fellow and never hesitated to volunteer for any work.

It may be mentioned that Mrs. Checkley has another son serving as a Sergeant in the Rifle Brigade.

Service Number & Enlistment Date

Shropshire Light Infantry service number 10167 was issued to a soldier who enlisted on 8th January 1913 and number 10480 was issued on 6th August 1914. Therefore Frank, number 10322 enlisted between those two dates.
