- The 3rd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment was a training unit, it remained in the UK throughout the war, providing drafts for other battalions. The Long Long Trail
- John is thought to have been a training and recruitment officer. We have not been able to find an entry in the London Gazette for his appointment
- It is not known when John joined the Army but a newspaper article shows that he served on a Leamington Spa Grand Jury in October 1914
