William is listed as being killed in action on 16 Jul 1915. The 1st/5th Battalion war diary entry for the period 11th to 18th July is transcribed below. Sunday 11th July 1915 - Trenches around Sanctury Wood to Sunday 18th 1915: Marched via Busse Boom and Kruisstraat to trenches of Zillebeke taking on trenches 49, 50, A1, A2, A3, A4 & A5 from the 5th Leicesters. Halt for 2 hours on way – distance 15 miles. All men in trenches including some in support trenches close up. In trenches – 3 wet days – mining suspected in 49 & 50 – counter mine begun. Casualties during time [11th to17th] – 2 killed – 12 wounded including Lieuts Rudgard, Glichrist and Robotham. |
