Circumstances of Death

Maurice is listed as being killed in action during the Battle of Romani on 4 Aug 1916. We have been unable to find any war diary or specific information about the part his unit played in the battle. A general description of the Battle can be read by clicking here.

A Memoriam Notice was placed in the Rugby Chronicle on 3 Aug 1918 which read "In Loving Memory of Maurice Howkins (Lieut, W.Rid R.H.A) of Hillmorton Ground, Rugby and of the Crewe Works who gave his life for his country at the victory of Romani, Egypt, August 4th 1916".
