Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Special Company's of the Royal Engineers fired gas and smoke shells at enemy lines, normally in preparation for infantry attacks.
The war diary for the 8th August 1918, the day Albert died of his wounds, states that the Company was in the lines at Rainneville and was ready to fire gas and smoke shells at enemy lines but the operation was cancelled due to wind and mist conditions. No mention is made of how but the Company suffered six casualties including one other rank who died of wounds (Albert).
