Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

There is some confusion about the date Walter died, all the military CWGC records state that he went missing and was presumed dead on 22nd August 1917 with the Warwickshire Roll of Honour stating that is happened near St. Julien. However the war diary states that the battalion had left the St. Julien area on the 20th August and marched to Reigersburg Camp where they undertook training from 21st to 25th August. On the 26th they moved back to the St. Julien area. On the 15th August the Battalion marched to Dambra Camp nr St. Julien and on the 16th they crossed the Yser Canal and took up a position west of the Steenbeek in support of 145th Brigade where they stayed until on the 19th August the Battalion were still in support of 145th Brigade and saw action at that position where they suffered 17 killed, 65 wounded and 1 missing. The 19th is the only day where casualties are noted from the 1st August until the 22nd. We believe that Walter actually died on the 19th and is the one man listed in the war diary casulties. The exact point from map reference for the position near Steenbeek (28.C.11.d.8.8) is marked with the blue pin on the map below. The other points mentioned above had red pins.
