Edward is listed as being killed in action on 31st January 1916. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 30th January to 1st February are transcribed below. Edward was shot by a sniper. Trenches at Sucrerie - 30.1.1916: Hostile artillery inactive. Our own field guns & howitzers were busy on enemy front and reserve lines. Bright day after a foggy morning. Trenches at Sucrerie - 31.1.1916: Bright sunny day. Enemy whizz-bang front line & also fire a good many rifle grenades, no damage done. Corporal Cusack sniped between 8 & 9 Posts. [Only casualty for 5 days] Enemy less active a night. NE Bleaneau nearly completed with Trench Boards. Catacombs greatly improved as a defensive post. Trenches at Sucrerie – 1.2.1916: Quiet day and dark night. Relieved by 1st R.Irish.Fus at night. Relief completed by 9pm. Battalion marched to Colincamps and went into billets |
