Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 5 Sep 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The 12th Battalion war diary carries only very brief entries and there are no casualty lists, reports or appendices in the diary. The period 1st to 5th September 1916 is transcribed below, it is likely he was killed during the relief operation mentioned below: Cannoy - 1st & 2nd Sept 1916: in Divisional Reserve in Bivouacs at Carnoy. Map Sheet France 62D Cannoy - 3rd Sept 1916 - 9am: - Moved up to Craters A.8.a.8.3 in reserve to 59th Bde in attack on Guillemont 6pm: Moved up to Bernafay Wood 10pm: Moved into position in front of Guillemont, captured by Royal Irish and dug advanced trench. Guillemont 4th Sept 1916: In front line as above Guillemont 5th Sept 1916: Relieved by Royal Munster Fusiliers and returned to Briqueterie Guillemont 6th Sept 1916: At Briqueterie in reserve to 49th Brigade |
