Circumstances of Death

William died of shrapnel wounds to the back and right hand at 3.30am on 14th June 1916 at the 10th Casualty Clearing Station in Lijssenthoek. We have not been able to identify the exact day that William was wounded and the 3rd Pioner Battalion war diary entries for the period 8th to 14th June 1916 are transcribed below.

War Dairy 8th to 11th

Camp H - 8/6/1916: During night of 8/9th duties were continued under orders C.R.E in strengthening defensive positions.

Casualties – Other Ranks Wounded 22

Camp H - 9/6/1916: Commencing the night by order of CRE, 3 Coys only worked night of 9/10 viz 1, 2 & 4. No 3 Coy rested in their billets. Work carried on under orders of CRE was:
No 1 Coy – New C.T. culvert to R 74
No 2 Coy – New C.T. R line to Gordon House
No 4 Coy – New F.T. from Oxford Street towards Menin Road.

Camp H - 10/6/1916: During night 10/11th No 1 Coy rested in billets in Ypres & No 2, 3 & 4 Coys continued work commenced the proceeding night.

Casualties – Lt Hudson Adj of H Camp – shell shock

Camp H – 11/6/1916: During night 11/12th No 4 Coy rested in billets in Ypres & No 1, 2 & 3 Coys continued work commenced the night 9/10th

Casualties – Other Ranks Wounded 4

War Diary 12th to 14th

Camp H – 12/6/1916: All working parties cancelled during night 12/13th by orders of CRE except a special party to work under 9th Brigade . It was realised that this would be a dangerous duty & the following officers volunteered, Major McMordie OC No 3 Coy, Lt MaClaren No 2 Coy and Lt McDonald No 3 Coy, the party was made up of 25 other ranks from each of Nos 1 & 4 Coys and 61 OR’s from No 3 Coy. The duty was carried out as far as possible

                           Missing OR’s 6
                           Wounded Major McMordie & 30 OR’s

Camp H – 13/6/1916: Night of 13/14th under orders of CRE No 1, 2 & 4 Coys carried on work consolidating ground won from the enemy.

Casualties – Wounded OR’s 2

Camp H – 14/6/1916: Night of 14/15th under orders CRE No 1 Coy worked at disposal of 9th Inf Bde in consolidating left flank of newly won positions. Details of No 2 & 4 Coy’s worked on a trench from NE corner of Maple Copse to Yeomanry Post. No 3 and remainder of Nos 2 & 4 Coys rested in Ypres billets.
