Circumstances of Death

Alfred is listed as dying of gunshot wounds he suffered to the thigh and back on 31 August 1918 during the Second Battle of Bapaume and died later the same day at the No1 NZ Field Ambulance, Achiet-le-Grand.

We have not been able to find the 1st Battalion War Diary but we do know the following: "The battalion was involved in attacking German defensive positions, including trenches and strongpoints, as part of the push to capture Bancourt Ridge and nearby villages. On August 30–31, the New Zealand Division, including the 1st Brigade, pressed forward, overcoming significant resistance from German machine-gun nests and artillery barrages. The 1st Wellington Battalion, as a frontline unit, would have been directly engaged in these assaults, likely facing heavy fighting given the intensity of the German defenses".
